The Bare FAQs
Waxing 101
Q. Why should I wax? A. Waxing is a form of hair removal that removes the entire hair from the root. If done on a consistent basis, hair will grow back slower, finer and much thinner over time. Most people find that with waxing they have less irritation and ingrown hairs when compared to shaving. Plus it lasts a whole lot longer than shaving too! Q. Why am I not smooth after my waxing appointments? A. Your hair grows in 3 cycles: Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen. In order to get the smoothest skin possible you need to get your hair growth on the same growth cycle. That means coming in every 3-5 weeks for waxing. Hair that has never been waxed or hair that is not waxed on a regular basis has very strong roots which can cause some breakage of the hair at the surface. These little broken hairs should be left alone (no shaving or tweezing), exfoliate to prevent them from becoming ingrown and they will get picked up more easily with each subsequent waxing service. Q. How long after do I need to wait to wax after shaving? A. Ideally, hair must be at least 1/4 of an inch or longer in order to be waxed. This usually means a minimum of 2 weeks of no shaving or tweezing. If you want to be waxed for a special occasion or upcoming trip, it is recommended that the process be started 12 weeks before the event in order to have the smoothest possible results Q. Can I still get waxed if I use Retin-A, Renova, or Accutane? What about after peels? A. There are many medications that can affect the integrity of your skin, thus causing your skin to lift during the hair removal process. Waxing is not advised if you are using various doctor prescribed medications, or if you have had a chemical peel, microdermabrasion or any type of laser treatment prior to your appointment. Always inform your aesthetician of any/all medications that may affect your skin’s integrity so that the appropriate precautions are taken. It is also advisable to consult with your physician to inquire how your medications may affect your waxing experience. Q. Is waxing safe? A. Yes! Waxing is safe! We use both strip and hard waxes to accommodate all different types of skin and hair. The skin is properly cleaned and prepped for the service. Gloves are always worn and equipment is sanitized. We NEVER double dip and promise that the wax being applied has never touched another person! All precautions are made to ensure a safe and sanitary experience. Q. What can I do before and after my appointment to ensure I have the best waxing experience? A. Make sure to gently exfoliate about 3 times a week and avoid heavy lotions and oils. If your skin is on the dryer side exfoliation is key and use of a light oil free moisturizer is a good idea. The day of the appointment try to avoid caffeine and other stimulants. Some clients feel that taking ibuprofen an hour before the appointment is helpful. Immediately after getting waxed, avoid exercising, hot tubs, and direct sun. Begin the exfoliation process approximately 2-3 days post appointment. Ingrown hairs happen and no matter how diligent you are with your home care they can still arise. Your aesthetician can discuss what home care is best for you during your appointment.
